What are the words you typically associate with a ‘budget’?  Probably confinement, dread, holding back and restriction to name just a few.  In our current economic conditions managing a budget is by far and away the most important part of running a small business.  If you want to get ahead you need to learn the proper ways to manage the company budget.  If you really want to stay in the game for longer than a week you will need to manage income and expenses in a way that will allow you to operate the business rather than react to it.

The reason why so many small businesses fail is twofold, first they take no thought in how they will attract customers and second they spend more money than the business is set up to make.  Essentially there are two ways to increase the bottom line; earn more, or spend less.  Increasing profit through sales should always be the overall goal of any business, but reducing expenses is by far the easier way to add to the bottom line.

When you can find cuts in the budget that accomplish two things, you really make headway.  What I mean by that is reducing one expense in lieu of another that does an even better job.  Instead of traditional print media like flyers or advertisements in the yellow pages, try promotional items like the best lanyards online, pens and pencils that you can give to local area schools or other business that employ your target demographic.

There are a few common things that destroy a small business owners budget even faster than a recession, these would be things that may seem or look cool now, but are not a proper allocation of funds given your businesses history.  Does a small regional cement company need GPS tracking in all its cement trucks to monitor time to and from the job, or advise the driver on new drop off locations, the answer is if they can save more money by getting the trucks back and forth to pay for and make money in labor, then yes.

In the end you will need to decide where the money goes, but if you follow a general rule of only buying things that are vital for the business to run, then you should be safeguarding your money.  Only by watching carefully the financials can you really be in a position to operate successfully.
